A Commentary by Stephen J Cocconi – Humane Being

“A moral compass can be magnetized two ways: toward what you aspire to be, or away from it and who you believe you ought to be to feel safe. You might say that orienting true north takes constant recalibration. Whereas going south is what happens when you run away from that responsibility. Either way your compass points – you face the consequences.” Michael’s Consortium

Guns Don’t Prevent Authoritarians, They Facilitate them!

For those of my friends who continue to throw around the word Fascist or Fascism, I find my anger growing since my father fought REAL Fascists during WWII, and paid a price with physical injury and depression that took his life early. I consider his sacrifice the reason that I was spared having to go to war. Thank you, Dad.

In an effort to utilize the LIBERAL education that my father fought so hard to preserve, let me give you a brief set of definitions and clarification about what Fascism is and is not.

Grateful to be a Liberal American!

More than any other tangible freedom, I value the right to be “secure in my person.” But this phrase from the Bill of Rights’ 4th Amendment, for me, extends further than protection from government. It harkens back to the 1st Amendment guaranteeing my freedom of expression. And by expression, I mean the right to speak my mind and disagree without someone else, who might interpret disagreement as their right to “take offense” and then act upon me in a reactive, punitive, or even violent manner. As a Liberal, I use my ability to think as a way of liberating myself from the fear which comes from ignorance. Not enshrining it as some sacrosanct order to be conformed to and enforced upon others.

So what’s the link for me as I celebrate our Independence Day? It is not government tyranny I most worry about, though on the horizon I see extremism undermining the halls of our democratic republic, instead it is my celebration of the rights of thinking people of conscience to advance our society through the dialogues of constructive disagreement.

In a conversation with a friend of mine, she mentioned that while reading a couple of my recent newsletters, she determined that their short length was a hint that something had happened to me. Her actual words were “what have you done with my Cocconi?” The implication, of course, that since I am better known for my verbosity, than my brevity, something was amiss with me. I’m taking the 5th! No not a fifth of tequila (though it sounds tempting); nor the fifth amendment – where I withhold from you in fear of being self incriminating; but the 5th Internal Monad.(IM)..aka “review of life task.” Continue reading »

A Hummingbird telling a rival to wait its turn.I live in the Sierra Foothills at a place I call Hummingbird House, because of the small contingent of “hummers” that visit our feeders. They daily perform a passion play for me where the actors may improvise their parts, but the theme of the story is always the same. It is a theme of cooperation through contest: confrontation for the sake of demonstrating the urgency of one’s need.

Strong Emotions create Polarization

Leary of intensity? Leary of so-called logic?

My heart is increasingly weighed upon by the realization that polarization in almost every venue of human interaction is dominated by unacknowledged “fear of other” which herds us into “sides”, makes being “right” a blood lust, makes being open to compromise an act of “weakness” or listening to the other person a traitorous act of disloyalty; and which brings more punishment from your own so-called “side” than would come from the so-called “enemy”. To be intolerant of extremism is the only appropriate use of such an extreme position. But I don’t for a moment pretend nor postulate some ideological or intellectual “superior” stance when attempting to justify it. The simple truth is, I get afraid of rage that has boiled into hatred because no one has the simple courage to say. “what you do scares me.” And actually listen to the other “here is what you do that scares me.” It is that admission alone which unifies us as foibled, vulnerable human beings. And in that…We Are All One! Is anyone else tired of the rancor masquerading as thought?
